Matthew Boardman & Alan Gubby formed Daz Odeum at secondary school in 1980. The bands name was taken from a postcard for a Greek amphitheatre. Inspired by Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Cabaret Voltaire, Fad Gadget and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, they were given generous access to the music department's Wasp synthesiser, added a couple of Casio VL Tones, some pots, pans, reel to reel tape recorders and echo boxes then started performing at parents evenings and school discos. Matthew was an electronics and programming wizard who built many of the bands instruments, handling most of the drum machines and sequencers whilst Alan played guitars, percussion and attempted to sing.
