The music of Days Were Like Lakes straddles genres and influences as wide-ranging as indie, acoustic pop, noise rock, folk, classical, hip-hop, 1960s movie soundtrack music, and minimalism, and takes a variety of different musical approaches, some as simple and straightforward as a single voice and guitar, and others as complex as a full orchestra or a collage of samples - all of which, in the words of one critic (Matt Parker of Sound Proof), “are used to great effect” on the debut album, Light Gets In. Given the multiplicity of influences and approaches, it should not be surprising that one song can sound “fresh and summery” (carlsandburgvisits.com's description of “True”), while another can sound "like something that came out of mid-winter in Nebraska” (Matt Parker again). Despite the diversity of sounds found on Light Gets In, the aim of Days Were Likes Lakes was to create a collection of songs that work together as a whole.
