David DQ Lee (David Dong Qyu Lee, born February 11, 1978 ) is a Korean-Canadian countertenor and member of the crossover quartet Forténa. He began his singing career at a young age as a boy soprano of a children's choir in South Korea. After his voice changed, he moved to Vancouver, Canada, to study at the Vancouver Academy of Music (VAM) as the very first countertenor to be admitted with full scholarship, earning himself the Bachelor of Music degree working with several noteworthy people like late Canadian Mezzo-soprano Phyllis Mailing, who became his lifelong mentor. At the age of 18, inspired by the 1994 film “Farinelli”, DQ Lee familiarized himself with the countertenor repertoire and quickly earned an enviable reputation among countertenors of his generation. He has been hailed as one of the top three leading countertenors in Canada by CBC Radio among Daniel Taylor, Matthew White, and Carl Strygg. He has won numerous international competitions since the age of 19, including the Musica Sacra International Competition in Italy, the George London Singing Competition in New York as well as the Francisco Vinas International Singing Competition in Barcelona, Spain, and has been actively performing on opera stages with multiple international orchestras since 2003.
