Daniel Croner (1656-1740) was a native of Kronstadt (now Brasov, Romania). He was a theologian and composer of music for organ. Croner completed four books of organ tabulatures (one in Bratislava, three in Wittenberg). The tabulature contained the works by various composers, alongside his own works. He began to copy Brasov manuscript on 30 January 1681, while he lived in Bratislava; he completed it nearly four years. Croner's aim seems to have been to copy what would be useful for his own keyboard playing, beginning with a set of etudes entitled Applicaturae and continuing with typical works that he could employ during Lutheran services. Croner had entered theological school in the early 1680s and then devoted his life to church. Although it is not known to what extent he may have used this tabulature later on in his career, the manuscript demonstrates that even in his earlier years Croner had considerable knowledge of contemporary keyboard styles and forms. Most of the composers are unknown; Croner may possibly have composed some of the anonymous pieces in the Brasov manuscript, however these pieces do not seem to conform with Croner's style - compositionally they are much more interesting than the one work securely attributable to him .
