Daniel's Tsuu-T'ina name is Bearcoat which symbolizes strength and warmth. Bearcoat is "one that keeps, protects and shelters the people. Daniels Crane was originally born at the Tsuu-T'ina Nation in Alberta, Canada. He was taught the Dakota/Lakota tradition from an early age, by both his mother and grandmother, values such as spirituality, family, and the importance of laughter. These values have formed in him a strong belief system which can be felt in his performance of his music. As a traditionalist living in a modern world, Dan keeps his people's way alive through ceremony, songs and the creation of hand-made flutes. Guided by his grandfathers, he carefully fashioned his first wooden flute. Carrying on the tradition today, Dan offers workshop and performances across North America to adults and children interested in learning to make flutes and the music that is created on them. His favorite audience are the children, who are always ready to laugh at his humorous stories and are able to still see the magic around them. His diverse interest in keeping his people's art and traditions alive led to his appointment a Assistant Director for the world-renowned Red Thunder Dance Company.
