Daggerhearts was a band formed in 2001 in New York. Its original lineup Victoria Legrand (vocals), Dirck Ober (guitar) and Lauren Turek (bass), who was the founding member. Alex Scally would later replace Lauren to be their new bassist. Alex was first introduced to Victoria by Dirck. In 2005, the band became dysfunctional and ended up splitting up, with Victoria and Alex thereafter forming a new band, Beach House. The connection of the band members of Daggerhearts started when Lauren was in her freshman year at Vassar College. One day, as she was walking up the stairs with her bass case to her dormitory room, she had an interest-based interaction with Victoria, one of her colleagues, who eventually invited her to have a jam session in her room, claiming that she had also written a few songs. Victoria also invited another colleague, Dirck, and then all three began practicing/rehearsing music in the basement of their dorm. Their initial musical style was heavily influenced by the diverse music taste of the members, which ranged from death metal, riot grrl and hip hop. The band would later record a few songs at a studio in Orange, Connecticut, even playing in small venues in the same state and New York. They produced around 20 songs at this time. Some of those songs would end up on their first album, Who We Were. They also had a few EPs and demos. Their recording/practice sessions would usually be one to two hours long.
