Curds and Grain are a Melbourne based original band. The instruments are keys, drum and bass and all the members have been playing in different bands for a quite a while. They used to play together in Captain Splash which was a live deep house band. The drummer is Michael Evans-Barker, he is the percussionist for Papa Chango and has also played in lots of Melbourne bands such as The Urban Playboys, C5, Spector and Captain Splash. The Keys man is Nadav Rayman and he has a beautiful sound based around rhodes and wurlitzer. He has also played in lots of drama productions and was a founding member and creator of Captain Splash. Matthew Coleman is the bass player and he is currently playing in the Urban Playboys and with Tweed. Matthew has played in many bands over the years as well as programming and playing bass for Captain Splash. They formed Curds & Grain as a vehicle to play music they love rather than trying to be a popular band. In particular they wanted to play in a reggae and dub style because this is the music they love. Throw is some jazz and drum n bass influences and the energy they create is great for lazy sunday afternoons and drinks into the wee hours. The band members have taken Ernest Ranglin as their guru, although I don't think they have ever met him, but they all speak of a strong love for his music and the simplicity of his rhythms and melodies.
