Cult of Luna is an atmospheric sludge/doom metal/post-metal/post-hardcore band formed in 1998 in Umeå, Sweden by guitarist/vocalist Johannes Persson and vocalist Klas Rydberg, after the Swedish hardcore band Eclipse broke up. It began as a traditional sludge band and has slowly integrated greater degrees of post-rock into its sound. After some member hunting and rehearsals CoL had its first line-up consisting of: Klas Rydberg, Johannes Persson, Magnus Lindberg, Erik Olofsson and Fredrik Renstrom. After a short period of time, Fredrik had to leave due to some personal difficulties. Eclipse was a sludge metal/metalcore/straight edge hardcore band that released a 2 song 7-inch entitled The Bona Fide EP in 1997. They had written and prepared/rehearsed enough songs for a full-length. however, the band fell apart before recording sessions, production and release/distribution occurred whatsoever. Johannes Persson once expressed regret over this event stating that he wished the band had had the chance to finalise such songs given the fact he is very curious as to what that alternate path would have wound up as. The songs ended up being lost in time's memory hole and abandoned/reworked into Cult of Luna early songs. Evidenced by the existence of a song from a Swedish Straight Edge Hardcore obscure compilation entitled "Receiver" which is a song off The Beyond. Their very rare - still unofficially released - 1999 exclusive promotion for record labels Demo is most likely what an Ecl
