Hasta Siempre (Hasta siempre, comandante) is a 1965 song by Cuban composer Carlos Puebla. The song's lyrics are a reply to Che Guevara's Farewell Letter when he left Cuba, in order to foster revolution in the Congo and later Bolivia, where he would be executed. The lyrics recount key moments of the Cuban Revolution, glorifying Che Guevara and his role as a revolutionary commandant. The song became iconic after Guevara's death, and many left-leaning artists did their own cover versions of the song afterwards. The title is a part of Guevara's saying "Hasta la Victoria Siempre" (Until the Everlasting Victory Always). The song has also been covered by Compay Segundo, Buena Vista Social Club,[2] Soledad Bravo,[3] Óscar Chávez,[4] Nathalie Cardone,[5] Robert Wyatt, Jan Garbarek, Inés Rivero, Silvio Rodríguez, Bobo Stenson Quartet, Maria Farantouri, Violeta Parra,[6] Wolf Biermann, Boikot, George Dalaras and Al Di Meola, Luke, Ahmet Koç, Mohsen Namjoo among others. In the 2003 version by Buena Vista Social Club, the last verse was changed from "Y con Fidel te decimos: hasta siempre comandante" to "Y con Cuba te decimos: hasta siempre comandante".
