Cristian Vasile (1908 - 1974) was a highly known romanian vocalist in the interbellum period. His best known song is "Zaraza". Other hits include: "Iubesc femeia", "Aprinde o ţigare". The story tells that he was madly in love with a beautiful gypsy woman, Zaraza. He composed a song about her which soon became a hit in interbellum Bucharest. Zavaidoc, another singer of the same period, was envious of Cristian Vasile's fame and success, so he took revenge by hiring someone to brutally murder Zaraza in the street at night.
