The name Cripple Mr Onion comes from a fictional card game (rules for the game were subsequently developed by fans of the author) mentioned in a series of books by UK author Terry Pratchett, who gave Cripple permission to use the name. The origins of Cripple Mr Onion go all the way back to Dunedin in the late twentieth century, where Mike 'Fud' Fudakowski and Andy Woodd were both music students at the University of Otago. Andy recalls meeting Fud: "I had only moved to Dunedin a day or so previously, and I was checking out all the music stores when I walked into this particular shop on the main street and saw this guy pull a five-string bass down off the wall and start slapping it. I'd never seen someone slap like that before (this was a while ago...), I was too freaked out to talk to this guy". "Later on I discovered that Fud was in a lot of my classes, and after about a year of jamming we managed to get a band together. Umlaut, the eclectic metal band which resulted only lasted for a year or two, but it was heaps of fun and I still really like the songs. I guess it really laid the foundations for what was to come..." Fud moved to Christchurch in 1996 to study at Jazz school, and when Andy finished University a year later he also followed Fud to Christchurch to start another band, teaming up with John 'Hooves' Clayton (drums) and Jeremy James Brown (keyboards)... and so, in 1996, Cripple Mr Onion was formed.
