Crib Death was born in Baton Rouge, LA in 1977 at the intersection of rock, progressive rock, glam, country, pop, and the nascent punk movement. Ostensibly a punk band (by name) the band came to fruition when Johnny Afterbirth (lead shouting) presented Myron Hitler (guitar, shouting) with an unsolicited page of lyrics: the song "Crib Death." Myron wrote the music, and a band was needed to play the song. Scabs Manilow (synth, shouting) and Meningitis Collins (bass, shouting) soon joined to fill out the ensemble. Numerous drummers played with the band over its existence, probably more than two dozen. The first, Cobe, is heard on extant recordings to completely walk off stage during the band's legendary live show at The Kingfish (Baton Rouge). "Freaking out" was the proffered reason. Mario Andretti, eventually replaced him and is on all other recorded live shows. Before he took the chair, many drummers were called and few were chosen. One applicant was insistent that the band formally induct him before he told them his suggestion for the new band name. The band agreed, and his suggestion was so bad that he was immediately expelled, leaving the chair open for Mario to join. Mario was smart enough to keep any creative ideas to himself. Crib Death fans were aware of two tours: the first began (and ended) at the Kingfish - "World Tour '77." The second was dubbed "Tour of the Americas" and encompassed some of 78-79. The latter portion of that tour was done without Johnny Afterbi
