COOL MEMORIES understands that the only constant is change; as dark, ambient synth swells over a fitful rhythm, gradually giving way to a full psychedelic episode it becomes clear: these weirdos are at home in a state of perpetual flux. It helps to explain that guitarist Bret Koontz and bassist Chip Hamlett cut their teeth in Chicago's underground noise scene, razing rock clubs and basements alike, and earning camp with Mayor Daley (PERMANENT), Cave (PERMANENT/IMPORTANT/STATIC CARAVAN), Bird Names (UNSOUND/PECAN CRAZY), and seminal noise-rockers Coughs (LOAD)--who invited them on the road for their 2006 U.S. tour. As documented by their 2009 debut album DEBT produced by Doni Schroeder (Forget Cassettes, ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead), these days, COOL MEMORIES’ noisy roots inform a new perspective- low lit, hot breathed, Julie Cruise inspired ballads set against heavy, acid drenched psych jams. With the addition of drummer Ben Newman, and saxophonist Ariel Mejia, COOL MEMORIES exhibit a strong experimental ethos without denying their pop sensibilities.
