As Contreau, Julian Determan blends and prunes found sounds into melodic compositions that physically occupy spaces, or at least make them appear so. His approach is comparable to that of a landscaper, only working with what he’s been given. In Julian’s case, it happens to be sounds and audio inspirations scattered across the virtual world. From these ‘found sounds’ he creates an auditory vista through which sounds assume different personas. Shielded under the sliver-skyline of Rotterdam’s architecture, the Dutch bred producer has steadily been releasing music for the past 4 years. Like many of his contemporaries, Contreau began producing hip-hop beats, then gradually broadening his production reach into minimal-electro and IDM. In the early days, Julian went by the name of Daedra. As Daedra he released two EPs, Detour Circuit (2011) and Décor Talk (2012) on Mr Happy Face Records and Granppa Frisbee Records respectively In 2012, in an act of self-rejuvenation, Julian bid adieu to ‘Daedra taking on a new alias, Contreau. Drawing largely from his blend of hip-hop and IDM beginnings, Contreau softened the edges of his sound and induced more textured tonalities. As Contreau, Julian has been independently releasing singles and remixes across multiple genres. Urban Street Crossing/Halifax is Contreau's latest release dwelling on swanky soundscapes.
