Constantin-Nicolae Silvestri (Romanian pronunciation: [konstanˈtin silˈvestri] ; 31 May 1913, Bucharest – 23 February 1969, London) was a Romanian conductor and composer. Constantin Silvestri received piano training at an early age. He studied at the Conservatory in Târgu Mureș and at the Bucharest Conservatory, among others, with the composer Mihail Jora and the pianist Florica Musicescu. From 1930, Silvestri conducted with the Orchestra Națională Radio, and in 1935 he conducted the Opera Națională București for the first time. After the Second World War, he replaced George Georgescu, who had fallen into political disgrace, at the Bucharest Philharmonic. He set up a conducting class at the conservatory, which he led from 1948 to 1956. Among the students were Sergiu Comissiona, Marius Constant and Anatol Vieru. In 1958 he gave the Romanian premiere of George Enescu's opera Oedipe, but he emigrated the following year, initially to Paris. There he recorded records with Leonid Kogan and the Orchester de la Société des concerts du Conservatoire. Silvestri has been invited to guest conduct with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra obligated. In 1961 he received the position of principal conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and in 1967 he received British citizenship. Silvestri died of cancer. Silvestri composed over 40 works for voice, chamber ensemble and orchestra. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA Licen
