Common Coincidence is an experimental jam-rock band formed by former Iowa State University students Joseph Hunt, David Budimir, Philip Mehrer, and William Stone. While the original lineup only played together for 1 year while recording in Stone's studio, the four remain close friends today. Hunt's melodic riffs mixed with Budimir's baritone vocals helped to infuse a unique sound. Stone's father, a musician and drummer himself in a band, helped to influence Stone's drum playing while Mehrer's bass playing added another element to the band's sound with his alternative rock roots. He along with co-worker and friend Rick Dassinger decided to play after work sessions and started to develop a new direction for the band. In 2009, the band recruited long time friend Steve Gordon to play bass in place of Phil Mehrer, as he left Chicago to work in Minneapolis. Budimir and Gordon began working on material for a new album in Budimir's basement, but the tracks were put on hiatus due to Gordon having other commitments and subsequently leaving the band in 2012. Currently Budimir is working on recording tracks weekly for a debut release of his solo album in the summer of 2022 along
