about

Formed in Prague in 1974, the six-piece Combo FH blended jazz with progressive rock in most unusual ways. Their debut release was a 7" EP entitled Kopytem různě, Vol. 11 in Panton’s Mini Jazz Club series, which came in 1976. It was followed by two full-length albums: 1980’s Věci (Things) and 1985’s Situace na střeše. The band were purely a part-time activity, all the while the band members kept their day jobs as everything from academic mathematicians and computer programmers to waiters and janitors. Their Věci album is acclaimed as their “classic” release, and it’s certainly something different than what one is used to: fourteen brief instrumental bagatelles full of jazz and new-music inventions, yet retaining accessibility and good humour. The oddest thing about the album is the use of found objects (everything from bicycle pumps to scissors to piggy banks) as percussion instruments.
