Cole Steef is a mistake. This mistake derives from the dull, rural-suburban hybrid town of Elk Grove, California, immediately south of the state’s capital, Sacramento. Cole began releasing music in 2019 under the name “TheSteefBeef,” before transitioning to “Cole Steef” in 2020, as per a nickname from his teenage years. His debut album, COWSWEATER, was released in late 2022, built entirely from the bedroom (if you couldn’t tell). The album showcased a sonic blend of alt rock, funk rock, and post-punk, inspired by the likes of Oasis, Peter Gabriel, Public Image Ltd, CAKE, Spin Doctors, Primus, Xiu Xiu, and aesthetic hints of the then ever-present hyperpop scene (may it rest in peace). Cole’s cynical, melodramatic performance on the record was backed with themes of isolation, unrequited love, reconciling with family trauma, particular struggles as a queer person, and his own sense of self-worth and empathy. He performed the record throughout the course of 2023-24, with a grand finale at Sacramento’s Concerts in the Park festival, in July of that final year. His most recent release, VELVET (2025), takes a step further into what he attempted with the first, with larger scale production, devilish pop rock hooks, greater hands on instrumentation, and so, so many cool drums backed by so many cool drummers 😎. He continues to perform with a full band, known as “Cole Steef & The Beef,” also known as the greater Sacramento area’s #1 aspiring traveling circus troupe. User-contribute
