Coconut Rough were a short-lived New Zealand pop/new wave band formed in 1982 and later disbanded in 1984. Their debut single " Sierra Leone" hit the NZ top five, with the band being named 'Most Promising Group of the Year' at that year's RIANZ Awards. The band was formed in 1982 by lead singer Andrew Snoid and guitarist Mark Bell, with other members consisting of bassist Dennis "Choc" Te Whare, keyboardist Stuart Pearce and drummer Paul Hewitt, with Bones Hillman coming on later as bassist. The group decided on the name "Coconut Rough" as a reference to a type of popular New Zealand confectionery slice.
