Christine Tobin (born in Dublin on 7 January 1963) is an Irish vocalist and composer who has been part of the London jazz and improvising scene since the second half of the 1980s. Tobin won Best Vocalist in the 2008 BBC Jazz Awards, British Composer Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Composition BASCA in 2012, and Jazz Vocalist of the Year, Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2014. In the 1990s she was a member of Lammas and, in 2010, released an album as Christine Tobin And Liam Noble with pianist Liam Noble. “a jewel of the London jazz scene, streets ahead of the pack… She should be on a global stage, rubbing shoulders with fellow troubadours like Cave, Mitchell and Cohen.” **** John L Walters The Guardian, May 08 Tobin began singing in her early 20s, discovering jazz through hearing the Joni Mitchell album Mingus, which led her to purchase the Charles Mingus album Mingus Ah Um and then other jazz albums. She moved to London in 1987 and sang in a band with Jean Toussaint, Jason Rebello, Alec Dankworth, and Mark Taylor before studying jazz at the Guildhall School of Music in 1988 and 1989. While at Guildhall, she formed a band with pianist Simon Purcell, double bassist Steve Watts, and drummer Phil Allen. For ten years, she sang with the band Lammas, led by saxophonist Tim Garland and guitarist Don Paterson. In 1993 she formed a band featuring pianist Huw Warren, bassist Steve Watts, and drummer Roy Dodds, recording the two albums, "Aliliu" and "Yell of the Gazelle", with them
