Christian Gotthilf Tag (born April 2, 1735 in Beierfeld; died July 19, 1811 in Niederzwönitz) was a Protestant cantor and composer. Tag was born in 1735 as the son of the Beierfeld cantor and school teacher Christian Gottlob Tag. After his first school education in his homeland in the Ore Mountains, he attended the Dresden Kreuzschule as a free student , where he received music training as an alumnus and choir singer under Gottfried August Homilius. Although he wanted to enroll at the University of Leipzig as a theology student, in 1755 he accepted the post of cantor in the small Saxon town of Hohenstein , a post he remained in until 1808. He moved to his daughter in Niederzwönitz, where he died in 1811. Tag was a teacher of the composer Christian Gottlob Neefe, who in turn taught Ludwig van Beethoven. Tag is considered one of the most capable organists, organ experts and cantors of his time. He composed a wealth of sacred works, which he created for his Hohenstein choir. The focus of his work is on cantatas, in which he sticks to the fugue form and uses many tone -painting and tone-symbolic elements.
