Chen Lei (陳雷 / Tân Lûi), born on February 10, 1963, in Xigang Village, Dacheng Township (西港村, 大城鄉), Changhua County, Taiwan (臺灣彰化縣), is a renowned Taiwanese Hokkien singer, celebrated for his contributions to Taiwanese pop and folk music. After graduating from Changhua County Dacheng Junior High School (彰化縣立大城國民中學), his music career began in 1991 when he was discovered by Golden Tone Records (金圓唱片). Chen quickly became a household name, known for his distinctive style, which included a signature look of a hat, glasses, shorts, white socks, and black leather shoes. His warm, approachable demeanor and grassroots connection to Taiwan's rural communities resonated widely, making him a beloved figure in Taiwanese pop culture. Some of his most iconic songs include "Happy is Best" (《歡喜就好》), "Is It Real?" (《有影無》), "The Wind Blows Strong" (《風真透》), "Don’t Cry, My Love" (《心愛的甭哭》), "Let It Be" (《隨緣》), and "Memories Are My Comfort" (《往事就是我的安慰》). "Happy is Best" (《歡喜就好》), in particular, struck a chord with the working class, reflecting their joys and struggles with its uplifting message of optimism.
