cheLovek is a musical project founded by Russian actor and musician Артур Смольянинов (Artur Smolyaninov), now based in Riga. Blending elements of alternative rock, post-punk, and deeply personal lyricism, the project reflects Смольянинов’s artistic evolution from acclaimed actor to introspective songwriter. Before launching cheLovek, Артур Смольянинов was best known as a film and theater actor. Music, however, had been a part of his life since childhood. Growing up in a musical family, he was exposed to a wide range of influences, from Soviet classics to Western rock. He began playing guitar at a young age, performing songs by The Beatles, Gary Moore, and Russian rock legends such as Звуки Му and Кино. Although music took a backseat during his acting career, a period of personal crisis led him back to songwriting. In his own words, music became a way to reconnect with himself, offering an emotional outlet that neither religion nor therapy could provide. This return to music culminated in the formation of cheLovek. cheLovek describes its sound as cinematic rock or human-rock (кино-рок / человеко-рок), a term reflecting the narrative-driven nature of the songs. Smolyaninov’s compositions often unfold like short films, featuring strong lyrical protagonists and themes of existential struggle, identity, and human nature. The name of the project itself — cheLovek (Человек, meaning “human” in Russian) — highlights its central focus on the human experience. The stylized spelling
