Charles-Antoine Branche (Paris, c. 1696 – after 1746) was a French violinist and composer active in Paris during the first half of the eighteenth century, closely associated with the emerging public concert culture of the Concert Spirituel. Little is known of his early life, but documentary traces place him firmly within the professional instrumental milieu of Paris in the 1720s–1740s, a period in which French instrumental music was increasingly absorbing Italian idioms while retaining a distinctively French elegance of phrase and form. Branche is best remembered today for his instrumental sonatas, published in Paris and explicitly conceived for public performance rather than private courtly consumption. His works align him with composers such as Jean-Marie Leclair, Jean-Pierre Guignon, and Jean-Baptiste Senaillé, though Branche occupies a more modest tier: a capable, stylistically fluent craftsman rather than a reformer. Contemporary notices confirm that his music was performed at the Concert Spirituel, an institution that played a crucial role in opening musical life beyond aristocratic patronage and into the commercial sphere. This association situates Branche squarely within the generation that normalised the Italianate violin sonata in France, adapting Corellian models to Parisian taste through restrained virtuosity and clear formal articulation.
