Cats in Boots was an international hard rock band formed in Los Angeles in the late 1980s by Japanese guitarist Takashi "Jail" O'Hashi, formerly of "Seikima-II", and bassist Yasuhiro "Butch" Hatae. The group was completed by American vocalist Joel Ellis and drummer Randy Meers, both previously members of the band "Merri Hoax". The band recorded an early demo, often referred to as the "East Meets West" demo, before travelling to Japan. O'Hashi’s established reputation and coverage in Japanese rock media contributed to the release achieving commercial success, reaching number one on independent charts and selling over 10,000 copies. This led to a major label deal and the release of their debut album, "Kicked & Klawed", which included re-recorded versions of material from the demo. The album reached number three on the Japanese charts, though the band did not attain comparable success internationally. Cats in Boots disbanded after being dropped by their record label. Following the split, Joel Ellis formed the band "Heavy Bones", which featured drummer Frankie Banali, known for his work with "Quiet Riot" and "W.A.S.P.". Several years later, an album of previously unreleased Cats in Boots material was issued. In 2003, several members of the band reunited for a short tour in Japan, and the possibility of further activity has been suggested.
