Carolyne Mas: Biography OCTOBER 20, 1955, 9:58 AM, Lawrence Hospital, Bronxville, NY: Carolyne (Carol Patricia) Mas is born to Livia (Alvarez Frank, of Spanish, African, Taino Indian, Italian, and Ashkenazi Jewish descent) Mas and Joseph Augusto Mas (of Catalan descent). Both of her parents had been born in Puerto Rico.. Her mother is a former radio singer/guitarist and math teacher, who migrated to New York City to study at the Eastern School for Physicians Aides, and her father is a pianist/baritone and scientist who attended Columbia University and, most notably, patented the first method by which batteries could be charged by passing an electric current through them. In fact, the first plug-in battery charger, which is called "Plug 'n' Play" and is very much like the transformers used today, is advertised on WABC in NY during the early β60s using the slogan "Plug 'n' Play with Murray the K", who was a well-known DJ at the time. Raised on Long Island, NY with her older brother Raymond, Carolyne is trained in classical piano, voice, and guitar, but is exposed to a wide variety of music, from Cole Porter to Puccini, and from Dylan to The Beatles. Her first paid performance is at a school dance at 13. She is very influenced by her father's sister Ana, a classically trained pianist, who for many reasons would have a great impact on her life, especially later on. Active in the theater in high school, Carolyne is also drawn to political music, performing at benefits an
