Artist
Carlos Cogul, a native of Reus (Spain) made his first public appearance at the age of eight singing solo parts in local choirs and religious ceremonies. He then went onto having singing lessons with Spanish baritone, Pablo Vidal. Carlos moved to Barcelona to study at the Academia Marshall with Mercedes Roldos, receiving Master Classes by Alicia de Larrocha. Carlos toured Spain from an early age in recital and concert and sang the song cycle Combat del Somni (Fight of Dreams) for the composer Federico Mompou. Moving to London in 1995, Carlos began collaborations with several opera companies singing the roles of Figaro (Barbiere), Marcello (La Boheme), Escamillo (Carmen), Papageno (Die Zauberloete), and the eponymous Rigoletto. He has also continued his career of concert and recital performances. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
This work merits attention for its intersection of rigorous classical training and deeply rooted Spanish musical tradition. Cogul's background—studying under masters like Alicia de Larrocha, performing Mompou's intimate song cycles—reveals an artist shaped by Europe's most exacting conservatory culture. What distinguishes his approach is the apparent synthesis of technical precision with the emotional particularity of Spanish vocal expression. His formative experiences interpreting twentieth-century Spanish composers for their creators suggests an engagement with authenticity that transcends mere performance. The album represents not simply singing, but a considered dialogue between a performer's heritage and the European musical canon.
