Carl Vine (October 8, 1954, Perth, Western Australia) is an Australian classical, theatre, film, television and electronic composer and one of the most prominent contemporary Australian composers. Currently working as a freelance composer, Vine is based in Sydney. Career Vine's association with the Sydney Dance Company began in 1975 when he joined as a rehearsal pianist. Two years later, under the guidance of the company's new artistic director, Graeme Murphy, Carl was commissioned to write music for '"Tip"', featuring amplified string quartet, orchestra and electronics. The premiere of the work in Canberra in 1977 marked the start of Carl's career as a noted composer for Classical Dance. In 1978, once again with Graeme Murphy choreographing, Carl scored Poppy, the first all-Australian full-length ballet. In 1980. Vine was appointed Lecturer in Electronic Music Composition at the Queensland Conservatorium (now Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University), while also being the co-director and pianist of the specialist new music performing ensemble, "Flederman". In 1984, he became Musical Director of the Australia/New Zealand Choreographic School (Melbourne) and resident composer at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. The last decade In 2000, Vine was appointed Artistic Director at Musica Viva Australia. 2004 saw his Cello Concerto premiered by Steven Isserlis and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jiri Belohlavek.
