Founded in 1999 by artistic director and conductor Heather Johnson, the Cantilon Chamber Choir (formerly the Schola Cantorum Chamber Choir) is recognized as one of Canada's leading choral ensembles for children. Members of the professional-level choir, ranging in age from ten to eighteen, are selected on the basis of their outstanding musicianship, experience and commitment to the art of choral singing. The premiere children's touring and recording ensemble of the Cantilon program, the Edmonton-based Cantilon Chamber Choir was created to provide the audiences of our city, province, country and beyond, the opportunity to share in the wonder of children's voices united in the creation of the choral art. At this highest level of the Cantilon Choral Program, choristers in the Chamber Choir are expected to achieve a minimum theory requirement of Grade II Rudiments and are strongly encouraged to participate in private vocal instruction. The Cantilon Program maintains its standard of excellence in the education provided by vocal coaches and theory instructors. Cantilon's Chamber Choir performs locally in concert at least four times per season, and competes in music festivals at local, provincial and national levels. The Chamber Choir embarks upon tours based on a three-year cycle: a regional tour in year one, national tour in year two, and every third year an international tour is planned.
