This local band plays music that eludes any easy definition, subtly created from a wide range of world music styles. The invented language in which the lyrics are sung makes the musical expression puzzling but also extremely relaxed. The syllables which guitarist and singer Jan Tomi weaves through the music act as an extra instrument, adding to the melodic colour and lush rhythms. This unique verbal invention frees up space for improvisation in live performance, lending the music an extra measure of the exotic and otherworldly. That said, the echoes of Latin American, Indian and Mediterranean music, with some folk rock and blues thrown into the mix, make the Caminoigra sound a very familiar one. This is not surprising given that Tomi is an experienced traveller who has absorbed a wide variety of styles from India, Spain and the Americas. The lineup consists exclusively of celebrated members of established Slovenian and international bands, including The Tamara Obrovac Transhistria Ensemble, Brina, Fake Orchestra, Bast and Folkestra. Their subtle and occasionally melancholic musical expression unwinds in a relaxed and elegant manner; under the surface, however, there is roughness and passion, wisdom and mystery. They have released three albums, Ishuan (2001), A New Child (2003) and just recently Yanu (May 2006). source: Festival Druga godba (www.drugagodba.si), text by Mario Batelic User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms
