Artist
Caspar Joseph Mertz (1806–1856) was a guitarist and composer active in Vienna during the Biedermeier period and remembered as one of the last major figures of Viennese guitar virtuosity. Born in Pressburg (today Bratislava), he published his first compositions with Tobias Haslinger in 1840 and achieved an important early success at Vienna’s Hofburgtheater the same year, before undertaking concert travel through Central and Eastern Europe. He married the pianist Josefine (Josefa Klara) Plantin in 1842, and from 1843 he worked in Vienna as a teacher of singing, guitar and mandolin, later performing occasionally with his wife. His best-known works include the opera-fantasy cycle Opern-Revue, Op. 8, the multi-book collection Bardenklänge, Op. 13, and other characteristic guitar pieces such as Le Carneval de Venise, Op. 6; he also wrote a guitar method, Schule für die Guitare (1848). A posthumous first prize at the 1856 Brussels Makarov competition is recorded for his Concertino for solo guitar. In modern listening life, his music remains well represented on recordings, including dedicated surveys of Bardenklänge and albums of his guitar duets on labels such as MDG, Naxos, Brilliant Classics and Tacet.
