“The beginning of Bright Young Lights was in early September 2009, when the four of us decided to rent a rehearsal studio in Schagen, Noord Holland. We knew each other from playing in different bands, occasionally playing the same venues. After the first rehearsal we decided that we wanted to write songs together, and soon the idea of building our own studio was discussed. We wanted to be independent from rehearsal and recording studios, so that we could decide our own working pace and not be tied to the opening hours of rehearsal spaces in our neighborhood. We were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to accomplish that. We enjoyed writing in our own space so much that we decided to record our EP there as well. We wanted to do everything ourselves, but the two times that we recorded the EP we didn’t get the result we wanted. After the second time Jaap-Jan Schermer, Bo’s drum-teacher, came over to help us with the recording. He did things that we could not have done ourselves, and he taught us a lot the recording process”. “We plan to record our upcoming EPs the same way as we did this time, because we can experiment with sounds and structures as much as we want without having to keep in mind studio-time or costs. We tend to radically change songs, even throughout the recording process, and there’s no way we could have done that if we would have recorded in a commercial studio”.
