Firmly rooted in the classical choral tradition, the Brigham Young University Singers are known for their compelling performances of the best of all kinds of vocal music. Organized in 1984 under the direction of Dr. Ronald Staheli, the ensemble has met enthusiastic response and ever increasing popularity because of the vitality and variety of their performance style. Each year the choir brings together approximately 40 multi-talented students from widely separated areas of the United States, representing a broad diversity of educational pursuits: science, engineering, humanities, languages, and - of course - music. They all share an ability and love for music, especially singing. Their artistry, expressiveness, commitment, and versatility combine with the choir's engaging style of presentation to create a unique concert-going experience with a message of goodwill for people around the world. In May 2001 the BYU Singers made their first concert tour to West Africa, performing in venues ranging from dirt-floored tribal meeting houses to the beautiful National Theater in Accra, Ghana. In 1999, the choir made a concert tour of England and Israel, performing with the Israeli Chamber Orchestra. The tour concluded with their own independently produced concert in Carnegie Hall.
