Brooklyn transplant Kaz Gamble and Los Angeles native Sisely Treasure originally joined forces in 2002 to form Cooler Kids, who nailed a contract with DreamWorks Recordings and quickly landed on Billboard’s Top 10 dance charts with All Around The World (Punk Debutante). Conceived as a side project to their Cooler Kids work, boygirL eventually became a full-time commitment to the duo’s underground musical leanings. For Gamble (who comes from a hip-hop background) the new material represented an outlet for complex experimentation in production and mixing. The off-kilter, yet melodic beats melded perfectly with Treasure’s exploration into a darker sound. She was interested in expressing an emotional, evocative voice, undisguised and without pop’s sugary coating. The result of their second collaboration is a postmodern bright spot in the electro/dance pool, drawing from influences ranging from classical to hip-hop music rather than new wave — it’s an untitled soundtrack for the affected dance junkie.
