Artist
Bouchaib El-Bidaoui, (born Bouchaib Zoubir) in 1928 in Casablanca's Bousbir district, was a legendary figure in Moroccan music and theater. Orphaned young, he was raised by his sister and went on to study French and accounting. While working at a laundry, he met prominent artists and began singing fragments of Aïta, gaining popularity among Casablanca’s elite. Deeply influenced by Sheikha “Arrono” and other sheikhates, El-Bidaoui began performing with the theater troupe Al-Kawakib, playing female roles—a bold move in a conservative society. His fame grew through appearances on the comedy show “Laugh with Me” and performances of Marsaoui songs with violinist “Maréchal Quibbou.” He became a sought-after performer at weddings and special events, even singing before King Hassan II. Sadly, his rising career was cut short by cancer, and he passed away in 1965 at just 37, leaving behind a lasting legacy in Moroccan cultural history.
