Active: 1989 to 1993 | New York, NY Emerging from the frenetic underground of late 1980s New York hardcore, Born Against stood out not just for their aggression but for the sharp edge beneath it. Formed by guitarist Adam Nathanson, bassist Neil Burke, and vocalist Sam McPheeters, joined early on by various drummers, the band never settled into a stable rhythm section, a volatility that matched their sound and message. From the start they embraced a DIY ethic and used every release as a torpedo, not simply to tear down musical norms but to rip open hypocrisies within the hardcore punk world itself. They did not hold back in addressing what they saw as internal weakness, division, and moral compromise among their peers. Their 1991 debut album Nine Patriotic Hymns for Children is often misread at first glance. The title riffs on American patriotic tropes, but the record is a scathing dissection of nationalism, conformity, and the brittle posturing of purity. Later, Battle Hymns of the Race War continued this path, folding in satire, raw energy, and outrage. As the band evolved, with members like Tonie Joy from Moss Icon and Universal Order of Armageddon and Brooks Headley joining in the last chapter, their tone grew darker, more cynical, and even strange at times.
