BOLDEN. is a UK-based jazz house duo blending live jazz instrumentation with electronic and house music. Emerging from the UK underground scene, the project combines improvisation, groove-focused production, and a performance-led approach that bridges modern jazz and club culture. The duo consists of Reuben Barrett and Catherine Rannus, both multi-instrumentalists with contrasting musical backgrounds. Reuben is a self-taught musician, performing on guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards, and brings an instinctive, rhythm-driven approach to composition and arrangement. Catherine is a classically trained pianist and vocalist, also performing on flute and saxophone, and contributes a strong sense of melody, harmony, and musical feel to the project. As one of the few women working prominently in the jazz house space, particularly on the instrumental side, Catherine brings a perspective that remains underrepresented within the genre. BOLDEN. was originally founded by Reuben in November 2023. In August 2024, he and Catherine connected through a shared musical vision, initially collaborating on a one-off basis. The creative chemistry between them quickly developed into a permanent partnership, shaping the current sound and direction of the project. The name BOLDEN. references Charles “Buddy” Bolden, the early jazz cornetist often cited as a foundational figure in the development of jazz.
