Richard Allen "Blue" Mitchell (March 13, 1930 β May 21, 1979) was an American jazz, rhythm and blues, soul, rock, and funk trumpeter, known for many albums recorded as leader and sideman for Riverside, Blue Note and then Mainstream Records. Sonny Red (December 17, 1932 in Detroit as Sylvester Kyner Jr. β March 20, 1981) was an American jazz alto saxophonist associated with the hard bop idiom among other styles. He had some success in the 1960s, but had fallen into obscurity by the late 1970s. Sonny Red played with Art Blakey, Curtis Fuller, Paul Quinichette, Donald Byrd, Grant Green, Blue Mitchell, Wynton Kelly, Billy Higgins and Cedar Walton. Here they lead their quintet of pianist John Hicks, bassist Gene Taylor and drummer Joe Chambers on this live date from the Crystal Ballroom in Baltimore, Maryland on March 20th 1966.
