Bisbaye was formed in Montreal in November of 2004 by guitarist and composer Jean-Pierre Larouche. Born and raised in Chicoutimi, Quebec. Larouche is a musician who has been exploring many musical avenues. Some of this exploration was carried out in recognized musical institutions in Montreal and also through his original musical projects. He studied Jazz and electro-acoustic composition and has been exposed to avant-garde and free music in the Kappa ensemble conducted by Philippe Keyser. But Larouche is before all an enthousiastic fan of metal music. It is in the process of creating a music that would unify all these different influences that Bisbaye was born.Hugo Veilleux (drum), Pierre-Luc Cerat (bass) who both attended music schools with Larouche and Antoine Desbiens (guitar), also born in Chicoutimi, then joined Larouche to bring Bisbaye to life. Using Larouche's compositions as a basic frame,they all together created a very powerful, complex and polyrythmic music that integrates improvisation concepts often heard in Jazz and free music, and where the very dense sonic signature for sure reminds of some of the electro-acoustic concepts.They also break the too often rigid frame of metal music, by including in their work open sections, collective improvisation and random tempo variations.
