Betting for Benson began soon after the summer of 2005. Through past experiences, lead singer/guitarist Ricky Kovacs wanted to create something that he and other band members could be truly proud of. After a call to fellow musician Mat Coxey, the two agreed that the idea would be worth while pursuing. That fall semester was spent writing and recording demos of new material for the project, as well as figuring out who the remaining members would be. The position of drummer was easily decided upon, as Brandon Coffey had played with Ricky in the past for numerous gigs. Brandon was a very talented drummer and the two also knew him from their high school days in marching band. Andrew Richardson later fell into the mix as keyboardist for the group. Ricky knew Andrew from his home parish and he played regularly for services. Andrew was an amazing pianist and had many years of music theory under his belt which later proved to be very resourceful. Paul Veto later joined the group on guitar. He and Ricky spent a lot of time that year writing material as well, but through later complications with distance during the summer, it was mutually decided that it was too difficult to include him in the group. The summer of 2006 came, and the group had much material to filter through to decide which cuts would make the album. Most of May was spent finishing up writing lyrics and arranging the music.
