Born in 1958 in Bayonne, France, Bertrand Dubedout pursued higher musical studies first at the University of Pau, then at the Paris Conservatory, where he was in the department of electro-acoustic composition and musical research under Pierre Schaeffer and guy Reibel, receiving his Prix in composition in 1981. Concurrently, he studied musicology at the University of Paris-VIII and completed training as a choral conductor at the Center of Polyphoic Studies in Paris. In 1988, he founded Ensemble Pythagore, a collective of composers and instrumentalists in Toulouse dedicated to promoting the music of our time. Since 1981, he has received commissions from the Musical Research Group of the Institut National de l’Audiovisuel (INA-GRM), Radio-France, the festivals Présences and Aujourd’hui Musiques, both specializing in world premieres, the ensembles 2E2M and ensemble Musical Contemporain, as welle as various other soloists and ensembles. He is presently a tenured professor of electro-acoustic composition at the National Conservatory of the Region of Toulouse. In 1997, the Société des Auteurs, Compositeurs et Éditeurs de Musique (SACEM) awarded him the Claude Arrieu Prize. For the year 1999, he has been named composer in residence at the Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto. Bertrand Dubedout’s sound universe lies within ultra-chromatic divisions, quarter-tones to be more exact.
