Bernadette Bascom Bernadette Bascom (born 1962) is an American R&B singer, vocal educator, and nonprofit founder known for her contributions to music performance, inclusivity in arts education, and community outreach in the Pacific Northwest.[1][2][3] Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Bascom is the daughter of civil rights activist and Baptist minister Rev. Marion C. Bascom and music teacher Lutherine Bascom, which instilled in her an early passion for music and social justice.[1] She began her professional career as a disc jockey before transitioning to singing, serving as lead vocalist for the Philadelphia-based group People's Choice and touring across the United States.[1][3] In 1981, she released her signature single "Seattle Sunshine / I Don’t Wanna Lose Your Love," marking her as the first artist signed to Stevie Wonder's Black Bull Records label, and the track became a staple in rare soul scenes.[1][3] Bascom relocated to the Pacific Northwest after a tour stop in Seattle, where she built a multifaceted career spanning performance, recording, and education.[1] For 15 years, she performed on the Las Vegas Strip, co-starring in the award-winning revue Divine Divas and as part of the Motown Moments at the Motown Cafe, sharing stages with icons like Elton John and Ashford & Simpson.[1][3] Returning to Seattle in 2004, she founded The Music Project Northshore in 2007, a nonprofit program partnering with the Northshore School District to provide vocal training and music educatio
