Artist
Benjamin Koppel (born February 21, 1974) is a Danish saxophonist, who as grandson of composer Herman D. Koppel and son of composer and musician Anders Koppel is rounded by a large musical family. At the age of 15, he co-founded the soul/rock band Tournesoul and at the same time formed his own jazz quartet, which in 1993 released the debut CD Benjamin Koppel Quartet. In 1992, Jacob Gades was the first jazz musician to receive the scholarship's major award. He studied in New York with the Cuban saxophonist Paquito D'Rivera and in 1995 he co-founded the crossover ensemble Mad Cows Sing, which with 4 classical and 3 rhythmic musicians has made a strong mark in Denmark as well as on the international music scene. In 1997 he premiered Anders Koppel's Saxophone Concerto No. 1 and 2004 Saxophone Concerto No. 2. In May 2015, the third CD with Koppel as soloist with Symphony Orchestra, Double Triple Koppel (Dacapo-records) was released, where Koppel plays together with Michala Petri and Odense Symphony Orchestra. His virtuosity and musical surplus are equally well placed in both jazz, soul, pop and classical contexts, and he has also – especially in relation to his young age – made an incredibly strong mark within these genres both in Denmark and internationally. His saxophone playing can be heard on a large number of Danish CDs with, among others, Danseorkestret, Moonjam, Rugsted & Kreutzfeldt, Maria Montell, Marie Carmen Koppel, Hanne Boel, Alberte Winding, Sanne Salomonsen as well
