On "Elmsfeuer" (Sähkö Recordings, 2010), Bastian Wegner has perfectly conjured up a selection of tracks, that while reminiscent of Twin Peaks, don't totally ape Angelo Badalamenti's very particular style. Through subtle electronic processes and delicate jazz touches the mood is set and Wegner gives us music perfect for the doomed winter months. Apparently he sent the demo to Sähkö in the spring, and they ignored it until winter, when it made more sense. Thank goodness the label saw sense to release it at a time when snow is on the ground, and the tempered smoky sounds can be enjoyed with a glass of port and a cigar. Fans of Bohren & der Club of Gore or the fantastic Miasmah imprint should look no further - this is your winter warmer.
