Basilisk Glance formed in 1997. In March of 1998, the group released its first full length album, "At a Glance", which was limited to 500 copies. All of the copies quickly sold out, and was a cult hit in the indies scene for its quirky, bizarre style. That year, the group also released two demos, "Misty Moon" and "Glass no Tori (硝子の鳥)", both of which were also hits. In March of 1999, the group released its first mini-album, "Raison D'etre", which, like "At a Glance", was limited to 500 copies. Also like "At a Glance", all of the album's copies sold out, and it expanded the group's following, for its sheer unorthodox style. Later that year, the group released two more demos, "Regrets Eterneles" and "~Toi et~... ()". Also that year, the group's original bassist, Shikopon, left, and was replaced by Kai. In April of 2000, the group released its second mini-album, "~Hane~", which was a smash in the indies scene as well. In September, the group released yet another two demos, "Untie" and "Tears Tea", both of which sold out almost instantly. In 2001, the group released two more demos, "Natsu no Hajimari (夏の始まり)", and "Lemon Sharbet", both of which continued the group's bizarre reign in the indies scene. 2002 was a much lighter year in terms of releases, and the group only appeared on one omnibus that year, "Kyuukyoku Gitai Seibutsu (究極擬態生物)", which was released that August.
