Mike Price became a cultural icon as “Baron Daemon,” the bumbling vampire he portrayed on WSYR TV-9 in Syracuse, NY for five years from 1962 to 1967. The character originally hosted late-night horror films on Friday and Saturday nights. But parents soon called complaining that their children wouldn’t go to bed until they’d seen the Baron. The station quickly added a late-afternoon kids show, “Baron and his Buddies,” five days a week. In 1963, the Baron recorded a novelty record that became the hottest-selling local single ever, “The Transylvania Twist.” The recording is resurrected every Halloween, and today the original 45 rpm records sell for more than $100 when they pop up on e-Bay.
