Artist
Barbarelli is a singer, composer and model, raised on the outskirts of the east side of São Paulo. Non-binary, they evoke their roots in MPB, R&B, Brazilian Contemporary and Latin music. They sing intimate and romantic songs. Singing has always been a necessity and a way to express everything they feel. By listening to artists such as Milton Nascimento, Alaide Costa, Beth Carvalho, Darondo and Liniker, they awakened their sensitivity as a composer and performer. This work merits attention for its sophisticated synthesis of Brazilian musical traditions with contemporary sensibilities. Drawing from MPB's harmonic complexity and R&B's emotional directness, the album explores intimate terrain without sacrificing intellectual rigor. What distinguishes it is how deeply the compositions seem rooted in lived experience—the particular vantage point of someone navigating identity on São Paulo's periphery—while remaining universally legible. The arrangements demonstrate genuine craft, honoring the lineage of Milton Nascimento and other formative influences while forging something genuinely personal. This is music that takes both its emotional honesty and musical architecture seriously.
