I reckon one of the great things about the current Nineties nostalgia trip so many of us seem to be on is the resurgence in shoegaze music. People are dusting off their My Bloody Valentine, Ride and Spiritualised CDs and musicians are bringing back those suffocating walls of impenetrable fuzzy reverb. Adopted Sydney duo Band Of The Free might be unveiling their dense nouveau shoegaze now, but they preceded the trend by a good couple of years. The brainchild of former Belles Will Ring chanteuse Jacqueline Schlender and Melbourne artist and producer Bryan St. James, the two relocated to the hollow glamour of West Hollywood in 2007 and immersed themselves in the town's seedy underbelly and the dark desert plains of California and Nevada. It's an influence easily recognised on the band's debut offering, the hypnotic and hazy 'Angels & Outlaws'. A musical cocktail of sweeping strings, murky guitar and ethereal vocals, the song is the perfect introduction to Band of the Free's atmospheric music. The duo will be releasing their debut long player on November 13, and hopefully some live dates will follow soon after. The duo have kindly offered 'Angels & Outlaws' as an exclusive download just for you.
