Babij Jar was one of the leading underground rock bands in Norway and held that position since its foundation in 1979 until they did their last live show in 1990. It is a six- piece guitar based group, and their music depends on the tradition connected to The Velvet Underground, Lou Reed, John Cale, Iggy Pop etc. The name Babij Jar is taken from the site of one of the worst incidents during the second World War II; the German massacre of the whole Jewish community in Kiev, Ukraine. The consciousness of the everlasting war, its brutality and ugliness, is the main line of inspiration to be found in the lyrics written by the bands singer, half American Paul Værlien. Babij Jar has all through their whole career been an example of the non-compromising artists seriously concerned about music, less interested in fame and profit.
