Denver trio BLKHRTS describe themselves as M.O.P.-meets-Morrissey. Somehow, this is largely accurate. They are louder than bombs and chances are no one will top their ability to yell "Ante Up" at karaoke. For all the blood-raw intensity, their aspirations are equally high-brow: They mangle samples from the dirges of proto-Joy Division outfit Warsaw, lift loops from Eraserhead, and have hooks that interpolate Gravediggaz. But for all the gothic melodrama, BLKHRTS are capable of stripping things down to the elements. One chorus yells, "Sex, drugs, violence, money, and death/ Besides that, what is there left?" It's a good point. Listening to BLK S BTFL feels like riding a roller coaster in the dark: violent, dramatic, and with many unexpected turns.
